After 2 months in Titusville, the 1st of February rolled around, and it was time for us to move on to our next destination – Kissimmee South RV Resort, in Davenport, FL, on the south side of Orlando.
It was only about 60 miles from Titusville, but we did not want to take the Florida Turnpike, or drive through downtown Orlando, so we took the long way around. We went south on I-95 to Melbourne where we picked up Hwy 192 which took us through St. Cloud and Kissimmee, where we took Hwy 17-92 south to the resort. The total drive was about 110 miles, and took us 2-1/2 hours, but it was a much easier drive than going straight through Orlando would have been.
We checked in for the month, and got set up on our pull-thru site right across from the pool.
Our site is on a busy corner, but luckily Casey has gotten better about people and dogs walking by – as long as dogs don’t run up to her, she doesn’t bark or get bothered by them – and she seems to have gotten over her dislike of golf carts, too.
We got set up, and Tom met all the neighbors . . . and found out that there was a chili cook-off that afternoon. We enjoyed hot dogs, chili, and ice cream sandwiches for dessert . . . and met more neighbors. It’s definitely a friendly park, and they have LOTS going on!
It’s a pretty big resort, with the RV section in the middle, and two large mobile home neighborhoods – one on each side. There are several ponds throughout the park, and a couple of walking paths that connect the two mobile home neighborhoods to the RV section where all the facilities and activities are located. We’ve explored the park on foot, walking Casey, and also on bikes – lots of area to explore.
There are resident sandhill cranes that wander around the park, making all kinds of racket early in the morning – they’re worse than roosters!
The southern edge of the park borders a cattle farm, and on a bike ride one day we met some of the neighbors as they cooled off in a pond.
This guy, with the big horns, was really staring us down!
Our first week has flown by in a flurry of activity – the chili dinner, community yard sale, ice cream social, super bowl party – and that was just the weekend!
Tom gave horseshoes a try while Casey patiently waited to continue her walk,
and while I was busy working he went to chair volleyball, dominoes, ping pong, and the HOA meeting.
Our evenings have been pretty busy, too.
Monday nights are a music jam. We were told it was pretty good, so we went over to the clubhouse to check it out. We expected a handful of musicians, but there were about 20 people there – with guitars and fiddles and other instruments – and a full clubhouse of spectators!
They were really good, and it was an enjoyable 2-1/2 hours of music! We were really glad we went.
On Tuesday night when we got home from dinner, we found that somebody had built a fire in the community fire pit, and there was a small group enjoying more music around the fire – another enjoyable evening!
Tuesday was also a big day for the space coast. The launch of the SpaceX Heavy rocket was scheduled for 1:30 in the afternoon. It was delayed by a couple hours, but at 3:45 it launched. Expectations for this launch were mixed, but it turned out to be a great success.
It would have been an awesome one to see from Titusville, but with the uncertainty about the launch, we didn’t make the drive over there. We gathered with a large group at the pool to watch for the rocket in the eastern sky. At the same time, we watched the live webcast on my phone, and I caught a few screen shots from the broadcast.
Countdown!
T – 0 seconds!
Blastoff!
In the air!
Our view from the pool
Even more amazing was the simultaneous landing of two of the boosters!
WOW – that was pretty cool! I wish we could have watched it from the beach in Titusville, but now that it has successfully launched once, it’s going to become a regular fixture at the Space Center . . . so we’ll have a future opportunity to see it, I’m sure.
It’s been a good first week, and we’re looking forward to doing some more exploration of the area.
For now, I leave you with a sunset.
You are never going to be bored by moving around and finding new things to see and do. Casey is really getting into the Lifestyle as well.
