We set out from Portsmouth, RI, on another 50 mile journey . . . we could really get used to these short driving days! The trip wasn’t without challenge, though . . . we needed to get across the Narragansett Bay via the Newport Bridge, and it was under construction!
The lane we were given was SO narrow, with concrete barriers on one side! I could just imagine the side of the motorhome scraping along the concrete! I had to close my eyes!!
Fortunately, we got through it unharmed and I could open my eyes again! We were still restricted to a single lane, but at least it was a full lane!
Now that I could open my eyes, I caught a great view of the Newport
Naval Base,
home of the Navy’s Officer Candidate School. It’s a beautiful location . . . maybe we’ll get to visit there some day!
A few short miles later, we arrived in Connecticut . . . and seriously, this is the lamest state sign we’ve seen anywhere in the US!
And this was on I-95, some some little state highway!
One more state added to our map!
A few miles later, we arrived at Seaport RV Resort in Mystic, CT.
It’s a really nice Sun RV Resort that accepts Passport America. Large sites, nice amenities, friendly people . . . and only 5 minutes from downtown Mystic, CT.
We had a long, level, pull-thru FHU site for $26.50/night.
Mystic is a much smaller town than Newport was, and we really only had one goal – dinner at Mystic Pizza – so we figured we only needed a small amount of time to explore. We explored all of the shops in town, but we skipped the Seaport – we’ll leave that for another visit!
Nearby Stonington is a historical seaport town. We took a drive through there first, before heading into Mystic, to admire the old architecture.
There were lots of homes with historical plaques on them, dating back to the 1700s.
Once again – a neighborhood we fit right into!
A few other interesting sights in Stonington.
At the tip of the peninsula, was the Stonington Lighthouse Museum, and a small park and beach.
From there, we continued along the coast to Mystic, just a few minutes away. More of a resort town, it was bustling with people on this beautiful fall afternoon.
We parked on the main street and walked through the shops, then across the drawbridge and along the river.
From the bridge over the Mystic River, we saw a sailing ship, and spotted a couple of womens’ rowing teams practicing.
Some houses along the river.
A few more sights in Mystic,
and we made our way to Mystic Pizza for dinner.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the movie, but the pizza sure was good!
Another successful stop along our New England Fall Tour!
Soon you'll have to start another list of places to visit. Glad you are enjoying your trip and the weather is on your side.
