Myrtle Beach Boardwalk & Getting into the Christmas Spirit?

DSC_0306

We had a little bit of a cold front come through late yesterday and, although we haven’t gotten any rain yet, it’s been a little chillier.

I know there are some people who spend the winter here in Myrtle Beach, and some of the people here in the campground are staying through December, but this wouldn’t quite be warm enough for us!

We’ll keep moving south!

This afternoon we decided to take a drive through Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach.  The last time we were here was in 2005, I think, and quite a bit has changed since then!

In the center of town, there’s a new boardwalk connecting the 2nd Avenue Pier and the 14th Avenue Pier.

It’s a really nice walkway along the beach, with many shops and restaurants that open right onto the boardwalk.

There were just a few other people out walking today, but I can imagine that this area gets really busy and crowded in the summer months!

This was one of the more interesting restaurants we saw . . .

. . . . not sure we’d want to eat there, but maybe we’ll go back tomorrow for the free beer!  LOL

There are also some nice seating areas,

and open stairs leading to the beach periodically.

The new Sky wheel was running, but we didn’t see anybody riding it!

We enjoyed our walk along the boardwalk, and stopped at the 14th Avenue Pier to talk a look down the coastline.

We would have walked out on the pier, but they were charging $1 per person, just to walk out there!  Seriously??  We could see enough from back on the boardwalk!

Bryce thought this fishing bench was oddly placed – it would be hard to catch much without water!  I’m not sure even high tide would bring the water up far enough!

We walked back to the car then, and drove through through North Myrtle Beach until it got dark enough to head over to the home of the Pelicans to see the Christmas Light Show.

It’s a little early for Christmas, but the light show sounded pretty interesting, so we wanted to check it out.  We arrived around 5:40pm, and our timing was pretty good – they normally open at 6pm, but because of the cloud cover, were going to open a little earlier tonight.  We were the 4th car in line, and were able to drive in just a few minutes after we arrived.

The lights were set up in the parking lot of the minor league baseball field, and synchronized to music broadcast on a local radio station.

The admission price ($25 per car) was a little steep, but we were impressed by the show, and enjoyed it quite a bit.  Along with the light, we saw Santa checking his list . . .

and at the end of the drive, there was a “Christmas Village” set up inside the ballpark.  They had games and activities for kids, including pony rides,

(Nick and Bryce didn’t want a ride!), pictures with Santa Claus,

and a bonfire where you could make s’mores for $3!  OK, at $25 per car, the s’mores and hot chocolate should have been free!

We warmed up around the fire for a few minutes, and then headed back to the RV to have dinner before “Survivor”.

Yeah, $25 was a little more than we thought it would be, but it was a fun way to spend the evening!  I’m still not quite ready to start thinking about Christmas yet, though!!

  1. The same show, Shadrack's, is at the Yogi Bear Campground in Nashville...here if you get tickets at the Ronald McDonald House, you can get in for $10 a car load...which to me is much more reasonable...and ALL $10 goes to the Ron McD House...

    1. $10 was what we thought it was going to cost . . . but I guess this is Myrtle Beach! lol Their $ was going to 3 charities, as well, though, so I have to give them credit for that!

  2. That does look like a fun family evening. But I still figure I have a good 5 weeks or so before I need to start dealing with Christmas stuff.

  5. Hi Marci and Tom,
We are in Homosassa Florida from Christmas until early April, about an hour north of Tampa. If you head back up from Lovers Key that way, let us know! great kayaking with the manatees where we are, and the Homosassa Wildlife Park is a must see.

  6. The bad thing with Fulltiming is the lack of places to hide Christmas Gifts. Kathy and I lucked out finishing that shopping in early October because now we both are dealing with Medical problems. Besides you still have 38 days until Christmas. Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.
